About Us
In 2006, a group of friends and family members established the Grace Oughton Cancer Foundation to support the family and health care needs of Grace. Over time the directors realized that the Oughtons were not alone in their struggle. Families all over the country suffer financial hardship as a result of insurance denials, travel expenses, lost wages, and more. In addition to the families’ hardships, pediatric cancer research is grossly under-funded. As a result, many treatment protocols are 10, 20, or even 30 years old. Fundraisers have stated that families whose children are fighting, or have fought, cancer, raise the vast majority of research funds earmarked for children.
With this knowledge, our foundation has taken on three main missions. First, we are committed to improving local clinical and psycho-social resources for pediatric hematology-oncology patients, that integrates with the primary treatment facility, in the interest of minimizing travel expenses and time away from family, work, and school. Second, we focus on supporting local families of children fighting cancer by offering direct financial assistance grants to help curb the costs associated with treatment, travel, and loss of income. Finally, we provide grants to pediatric cancer researchers, who are working tirelessly to find an effective way to eradicate this terrible disease, boasting over $495,000 in research grants to date.
Our Foundation is an all-volunteer organization managed by seven directors with diverse educational backgrounds providing the breadth of experience necessary to move forward. We are committed to keeping our overhead low, so that the greatest portion of every dollar raised goes toward our cause.
The GOCF is a registered non-stock corporation with the Commonwealth of Virginia. We are tax exempt and a registered charitable 501(c)3 organization with the IRS. Our Federal Tax ID number is 20-5721036. Thank you for your continued support.
